The Xbox360 Red Ring of Death Meaning

xbox-360-red-ring-of-death-repairThe Xbox360 Red Ring of Death has got to be one of the most notorious system errors in gaming console history. The Red Ring of Death is so common amongst Xbox 360 owners that it's estimated occurance rate is 1 out of every 10 Xbox 360's! Some unofficial reports even claim that it's 1 in every 3!

But what exactly is the Xbox360 Red Ring of Death - and what does it mean? And how does an Xbox 360 get it?

The Red Ring of Death is an error that consists of 3 Red Lights that light up the center power button that is usually green. The Xbox360 Red Ring of Death or the RROD for short, generally means that until you find a way to repair your 360, your system will be inoperable. The Red Ring of Death occurs primarily when an Xbox 360 over-heats.

Since the time of the 360's release, it has been known that the system suffered from over-heating issues, and still does to this day - which explains why the Red Ring of Death is so common. It seems that when the motherboard is exposed to too much heat, it starts to bend. This causes the soldering that holds everything together to break.

Once this happens the heat sinks (responsible for keeping the GPU and CPU protected) are thrown of balance, causing the system to become unstable. Once this happens the Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) and the Central Processing Unit (CPU) (two very important chips) get exposed to extreme heat and cannot function properly. Once these chips overheat your system shuts down and displays the red light error.

Microsoft eventually acknowledged the degree to which the Red Ring of Death was affecting their consoles and offered a service where buyers could turn in and replace their system with a new one.

xbox-360-red-ring-of-deathMicrosoft officially stated that the failure rate of the 360 falls inbetween 3 and 5 percent. Microsoft has stated that this figure is well-within industry standards for console failure - but is this really true?  Those who have suffered from the Xbox360 Red Ring of Death and retailers who have had plenty of refunds because of this very issue, have suggested that the 360's failure rate is much higher than 3 and 5 percent.

Due to the outrageous returns and refunds being issued by customers the Daily Tech decided to run a poll for retail stores offering in-store extended warranties, to determine a more accurate figure of the system failure rate from the red ring of death. Not long after the start of the poll it was discovered that the Xbox 360 is one of the least reliable gaming systems to date.

Other retailers world-wide were able to correlate their own figures to determine that nearly one third of all Xbox 360 consoles manufactured suffered from the Red Ring of Death. A department manager working in customer service from a large retail store, who wished to remain anonymous, stated the failure rates from the red ring of death were “between a quarter to a third” of all units that were sold.

We see a ton of [Xbox 360s] come back all the time. We strongly push our customers to buy our service plans no matter what they buy, but it is especially important for them with the Xbox 360,” stated the department manager. “It’s a lucky thing for us that Microsoft extended the factory warranty to one year, because we were having a hell of a time dealing with the launch units. Now we don’t have to deal with those broken [Xbox 360s] until their second year, for those who have purchased the two year plans.”

It's interesting that Microsoft eventually acknowledged that the 2005 Xbox 360’s had a below-average failure rate. Because of this "below-average" statistic, Microsoft officially stated they would repair any defected consoles from 2005, and give refunds to those who asked for oneThis problem has become so common and wide-spread that a 'special' option has been given for the red ring of death in Microsofts customer support line.

Due to the outrageous statistics illustrating just how unreliable the Xbox 360 can be, it’s vitally important that Xbox 360 owners know how they can protect their systems, and what they can do to fix the Xbox360 red ring of death should they ever get it.

I am a huge advocate of self-fix-it methods as I have seen too many people dissatisfied, and upset when going through Microsofts customer support. Too many people have sent their systems into the Manufacturer to repair the red ring of death, and have gotten their consoles back unrepaired. In my mind that is unacceptable. So repairing your console yourself using an Xbox 360 repair guide, you are guaranteed a permanent repair for the red ring of death that for some reason, the Manufacturer has been unable to do yet.
